Those steps are exactly what I learned except for one thing. If will open up the lense in the bulb setting like your were talking about. Then place a soft black cloth over the lense. When the fireworks leave the ground, pull the cloth off. Replace it as they start to fade. Repeat three or four times before releasing the shutter. It makes brilliant shots. You have no movement because you never touch the camera.
