Take a look at these portraits and tell me what I can do to improve. Be nice if you must, but don't hold back anything. I need your criticism.
This is one of my friend's little girls. Isn't she a cutie? What are your tips on getting good child portraits?
Now for my husband :) He loves the water so this was perfect for him.
What are your tips for post processing portraits? Any advise is greatly appreciated.

When I take family portraits I take the photo when people are unaware or not "posing"
For starters, I think the first photo of the child captures her character. Some would say--but you cut off the top of her head. I think that is actually effective in this case. You got right in and got that mischievous look in a fun gleam in her eye. The second one just doesn't do it.
I think the last photo of your husband captures him in a way that something recognizable like the first two doesn't. It captures a bit of personality that does not show in the same way in the face shots.
I think a lot depends on what you are trying to capture. I can't offer you any technical advise, just the fact that with digital, jsut snap away and keep the ones that work. Put up a collection of ones that work and see what it is that you like about them, then maybe another time you will see the perfect situation to capture that personality photo.
